Start with printer and binding constraints
Check the printer manual for supported sizes, paper types and weights. Check the punch, trimmer or binding-machine instructions for sheet capacity. Manufacturer limits describe their equipment; they do not promise the complete printer-paper-ink-binding combination.
- Confirm the source sheet size and feed tray.
- Check whether duplexing supports the chosen stock.
- Use fewer sheets per punch or binding cycle than the stated maximum when testing unfamiliar stock.
Test writing and show-through
Print a layout with solid text, fine rules and a representative reverse side. Try the pens, pencils or markers you use, then inspect drying, feathering, bleed and show-through under normal light.
A heavier sheet can reduce show-through but may feed or bind less easily. A smoother sheet may feel different with pencil or quick-drying ink.
Buy only after the sample works
Run the scale, duplex, trim and binding checks on a small quantity. Keep the paper packaging or specification with your test notes so you can repeat a successful setup.
