Which sheet to choose

Naming flat shapes such as squares, circles, triangles and hexagons usually starts in kindergarten, and telling them apart by their sides and corners in grades 1 and 2. Start upright; the turned sheet shows a square standing on a corner and triangles of every shape, which is where children learn that turning a shape does not change its name.

Counting sides and corners

Put a finger on one corner and go round the shape, counting each straight side until you are back where you started; mark the first side so it is not counted twice. A shape has as many corners as sides. A circle and an oval have one curved edge and no corners, so both counts are 0.
