One letter a page, A to Z, as big as the paper allows

Colouring and cutting

Colour inside the line with felt pens or paint pens, or print on coloured card and leave them plain. The wide strokes leave room to fill with patterns or stripes. To cut, follow the outline with scissors, turning the sheet at each corner; a craft knife gives the cleanest square corners.

For a poster, a sign or a bulletin board

For a poster title, print each word at 2 or 3 inches and line the letters up along a pencil line. For a bulletin board heading, print 4 or 5 inch letters on coloured card and staple them on. The shadow gives each letter a 3D edge, so it stands out from a busy background.

Which size to print

The height is a capital letter’s; lower-case letters with a tail, as g and y, reach a little below the line. At 1 in (2.5 cm) the whole alphabet fits on one sheet, for labels and cards; at 2 in (5 cm) a sheet holds a dozen or more, for small banners; at 4 in (10 cm) four or five, for bulletin boards. Up to 5 in (13 cm) every letter fits across Letter or A4, one or two to a page; narrower letters, as I, L and T, can go taller, and the sheet says when a letter is too wide for the paper. Or choose One a page, and every letter prints as tall as the paper allows: about 5½ in (14 cm) for A to Z, and 7 to 8 in (18 to 20 cm) for most names.
