How long to keep your tax records, by the IRS’s periods: the papers behind a return for 3 years after you file it, 7 years for a loss from worthless securities or a bad debt, and at least 4 years for a household employee’s tax records. Keep copies of the filed returns themselves. Each row has room for where the paper is kept and the year it can go; blank rows below are for your other papers.

Each period on the sheet is the IRS’s, from its page “How long should I keep records?”, read on 16 October 2026. The years count from the day you filed the return, and a return filed early counts as filed on the due date. The IRS gives longer periods in two cases not on the sheet: six years if income you should have reported, more than 25% of the gross income shown on your return, was left off, and with no time limit if no return was filed or a return was fraudulent.
Papers that are not tax records
Write in your other papers, such as insurance policies, warranties or loan papers, with the time the company or lender asks you to keep them. The IRS says to check this before throwing out any record: an insurer or a creditor may want it kept longer than the IRS does.
Edit the list before printing
The rows are a starting list. Change, delete or add rows in the entries box: one row per line, with a vertical bar between columns. A row in capitals prints as a heading without a checkbox.
