Which sheet to print

The labelled sheet explains the four stages and what the turkey eats at each. To label, a child writes egg, poult, young turkey or turkey in each box, with the word bank under the pictures. To cut and glue, the child cuts out the four pictures and glues them in order, following the arrows from the egg in box 1: a good first sheet for a child who is not yet writing. To cut and glue prints the labelled sheet after it as the answer key, and so does To label, then the answer key.

The turkey at Thanksgiving

The turkey is a North American bird. People in southern Mexico and Central America tamed it about 2,000 years ago, and from the 1500s tame turkeys were taken around the world and bred into many kinds of farm turkey, the bird of the Thanksgiving table. The sheet shows the wild turkey, which still lives in woods and fields. This follows the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Tom or hen

The grown turkey on the sheet is a tom, a male. The Missouri Department of Conservation describes him as very large and dark, with a bare red and blue head, red wattles at the throat and bronze feathers that shine. A hen is smaller and less shiny. Toms, and some hens, also grow a beard, a tuft of hairlike feathers in the middle of the breast.

Beside the chicken

A poult, like a chick, hatches covered in down and can walk and peck for food soon after, because both grow up on the ground. A turkey egg takes about a month to hatch; a chicken egg takes 21 days. Lay the two sheets side by side and a class can compare them stage for stage.

Disguise a turkey template

A large turkey in outline for the disguise-a-turkey project: the turkey wants to hide before Thanksgiving, so children dress it up as something else, with crayons, paper, fabric or anything to hand, then name the disguise on the lines below.
