Labelled, with what each part is

To label, with a word bank

To label, then the answer key

Which sheet to print

Labelled, with what each part is names the eight parts on the picture, each joined to its part by a line, and puts a sentence on each under it. To label leaves a numbered, empty box for each part, puts the names in a word bank and, on Letter and A4 in portrait, asks three questions that the answer key answers. In Colour the body prints green and the wings pale blue; Ink saver prints the insect as outlines, to colour in.

Where the legs and wings grow

All six legs and all four wings are joined to the thorax, the middle part of the body, and the sheet draws them there. The thorax has three segments: each has a pair of legs, and the wings grow from the last two. Most adult insects have two pairs of wings; flies have only one. This follows NC State Extension’s Gardener Handbook and Purdue University Extension’s pages on insect anatomy for 4-H.

Is a spider an insect?

No. An adult insect has three body parts, six legs and a pair of antennae. A spider has eight legs and no antennae, and its head and thorax are joined in one part, so it belongs with the scorpions, ticks and mites, not with the insects. Purdue University Extension’s page on telling insects from their relatives sets out the difference, and the sheet says it under the picture.

Print either one labelled, with what each part is; to label, with empty boxes, a word bank and three questions; or with the names to cut out and glue in. The labelled sheet follows as the answer key.

Food chain worksheet

Two food chains, each read from the bottom up. In a meadow: the Sun, grass, a grasshopper, a frog, a snake and a hawk, with the mushrooms that break down whatever dies. In a kelp forest: the Sun, kelp, sea urchins and sea otters, with bacteria. Print either one labelled; to label, with a word bank and three questions; or to cut and glue in order. The labelled sheet follows as the answer key.

Food web worksheet

Print it labelled, with five questions, or with the arrows left out to draw from the clues. The labelled sheet is the answer key. Or draw your own web, from a place you know.
