Labelled, with what happens at each stage

To label, with a word bank

To label, then the answer key

To cut and glue in order, then the answer key

A log to fill in as it grows, with a box to draw each stage

Which sheet to print

The labelled sheet explains the four stages and what the plant needs at each. To label, a child writes seed, sprout, seedling or adult plant in each box, with the word bank under the pictures. To cut and glue, the child cuts out the four pictures and glues them in order, following the arrows from the seed in box 1: a good first sheet for a child who is not yet writing. To cut and glue prints the labelled sheet after it as the answer key, and so does To label, then the answer key. The log is for a bean grown beside the sheet: a child writes the day the bean was planted, then the date each stage first appears and the days since the one before, and draws it in the box.

Grow one beside the sheet

A bean grows fast enough to watch in class. Plant one in a cup of soil, keep it watered and warm, and set it where the light comes in: the root, the shoot and the first leaves follow the sheet’s pictures, and a child can write each one on the log the day it comes. The reading passage “Sam’s Bean Plant” tells the same story. The cycle closes because the pods hold seeds: each seed holds a new plant, as the Missouri Botanical Garden puts it.
