The eight phases, named

Phases to name, with a word bank

Phases to name, then the answer key

Moons to shade, named

Moon journal, 30 nights to draw

Which sheet to print

The eight phases, named, is the one to learn from: each Moon drawn as it looks, its name beside it, in order round the ring. Phases to name leaves a line beside each Moon and lists the names in a word bank, in alphabetical order so the order is not given away; with the answer key, the named sheet follows as a second page. Moons to shade gives the outlines with their names, for the dark part to be shaded in. The Moon journal has 30 circles, one for each night the Moon is out, with a line for the date: start it on the night of a new Moon, from the dates on the Moon phase calendar, and a month of drawings shows the whole cycle.

Reading the phases

NASA gives the phases in this order: new Moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full Moon, waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent, and the cycle repeats about every 29.5 days. Waxing means the lit part grows night by night; waning means it shrinks. NASA also calls the third quarter the last quarter. The drawings show the Moon as it looks from the Northern Hemisphere, the view NASA’s guide describes, so the lit part is on the right while it waxes.
