Which sheet to print

The labelled sheet explains the four stages and what the tree needs at each. To label, a child writes seed, young tree, blossom or apple in each box, with the word bank under the pictures. To cut and glue, the child cuts out the four pictures and glues them in order, following the arrows from the seed in box 1: a good first sheet for a child who is not yet writing. To cut and glue prints the labelled sheet after it as the answer key, and so does To label, then the answer key.

Why one apple tree is not enough

An apple tree needs pollen from a different kind of apple tree to make apples, and a crabapple will do. Bees and flies carry it from flower to flower, so the second tree has to be close, within about 100 feet. A seed from an apple grows a new kind of tree, because every apple seed is different; an apple tree bought to plant is a branch of the kind wanted, joined onto another tree’s roots. This follows University of Minnesota Extension.

Picking apples

On a trip to an orchard, the red alone does not show that an apple is ripe. Look at the skin around the red: when it turns from green to greenish-yellow, the apple is starting to ripen. Then taste one: an unripe apple is starchy and leaves a sticky film on your teeth, while a ripe one may still be tart but has its full flavor. This follows University of Minnesota Extension.
