Which sheet to print

The labelled sheet explains the four stages and when each comes in the year. To label, a child writes egg sac, spiderling, young spider or spider in each box, with the word bank under the pictures. To cut and glue, the child cuts out the four pictures and glues them in order, following the arrows from the egg sac in box 1: a good first sheet for a child who is not yet writing. To cut and glue prints the labelled sheet after it as the answer key, and so does To label, then the answer key.

An egg sac in the garden

A papery tan ball, a little smaller than a ping-pong ball, fixed to a plant in fall may be this spider’s egg sac. Leave it where it is: the spiderlings come out of it in spring. In winter, birds such as titmice and chickadees eat some of them. This follows the Missouri Department of Conservation.

A spider to watch

The black-and-yellow garden spider is harmless, the Missouri Department of Conservation says, and a female tends to stay in one spot all summer, which makes her a good spider for a class or a family to watch. Disturbed, she shakes her web until it blurs. The male is much smaller and rarely noticed; he courts the female by plucking the strands of her web.
