The labelled sheet explains the four stages and what changes at each. To label, a child writes egg, tadpole, froglet or frog in each box, with the word bank under the pictures. To cut and glue, the child cuts out the four pictures and glues them in order, following the arrows from the eggs in box 1: a good first sheet for a child who is not yet writing. To cut and glue prints the labelled sheet after it as the answer key, and so does To label, then the answer key. The log is for watching real tadpoles: a child writes the date each stage first appears and the days since the one before, and draws it in the box.
Why a leopard frog
The northern leopard frog lives in ponds, marshes and wet meadows, and its spots, each with a light ring, make it easy to recognize. Its eggs hatch in 2 to 17 days and it takes three to six months to become a frog, depending on how warm it is, from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The order the legs grow in and the gulps of air follow Wikipedia’s article on tadpoles.
Beside the butterfly
A class that has done the butterfly’s life cycle can lay the two sheets side by side. Both start as an egg and have four stages, but the caterpillar changes inside a chrysalis, out of sight, while the tadpole changes a little at a time in the water, where a child can watch the legs come and the tail go. To find eggs, look in spring: leopard frogs usually start to breed in early April, or from late April to early May farther north and in the mountains, as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service puts it.
