Which sheet to print

Labelled names the fourteen bones and groups of bones on the two pictures, each joined to its bone by a line, and puts a sentence on each, with how many bones a hand and a foot have, on the page after them. To label leaves a numbered, empty box for each, puts the names in a word bank, the hand’s and the foot’s in rows of their own, and on Letter and A4 upright asks three questions that the answer key answers. To cut and glue prints the names in dashed tiles to cut out and glue into the boxes, then the labelled sheet as the key. In Colour the bones print in ivory, the wrist bones, the talus and the cuneiforms a shade darker so they stand apart; Ink saver prints them as outlines, to colour in.

Phalanges, carpals and tarsals

Phalanges are the bones of the fingers and the toes. The thumb and the big toe have two each, a proximal and a distal phalanx, and every other finger and toe has three, with a middle phalanx between them: 14 in each hand and 14 in each foot. The carpals are the eight small bones of the wrist, in two rows, and the metacarpals the five bones of the palm, one for the thumb and one for each finger. The foot’s seven tarsals are the talus, the calcaneus, the navicular, the cuboid and the three cuneiforms, and its five metatarsals reach from them to the toes.

The back, middle and front of the foot

StatPearls divides the foot into three parts. The hindfoot is the talus and the calcaneus: the talus, the ankle bone, meets the tibia and the fibula at the ankle, and the calcaneus under it, the heel bone, is the largest tarsal, bearing much of the body’s weight. The midfoot is the navicular, the cuboid and the three cuneiforms. The forefoot is the five metatarsals and the 14 phalanges.

How many bones are in the hands and feet?

One hand has 27 bones and one foot 26, StatPearls counts. The National Cancer Institute’s list of an adult’s 206 bones gives the two hands 16 carpals, 10 metacarpals and 28 phalanges, and the two feet 14 tarsals, 10 metatarsals and 28 phalanges: 106 bones, more than half of the skeleton, which the labelled sheet prints as its last line. The sheet draws a right hand and a right foot; a left hand and foot are their mirror image.
